Charlie Cahplin has blue eyes… just so you know that picture is wrong.

    • Abc

That was the first thing I noticed!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kev-Stacey/630806141 Kev Stacey

        Me too.

    • Anonymous

      *had*
And, not that I know the first thing about it, but a closer examination of the original sure looks as if they are brown. Compare that to the original photos of those with blue eyes and it’s very obvious.

  • Wally

On most of these photos the photographer intended the shot to be in black and white. Maybe learning about light and shadows would be more productive than learning colorization.

    • Wayne R.

“Most” of these, I think, the photographer had no choice.

      • AJ

Actually Kodak made the first “tripack” color film in 1935. It was available for most of these photographers but most considered B&W a more evocative medium.

    • Sarah

@Wally — I see what you’re saying. Knowing that no color would appear, and taking full advantage of all b&w had to offer them, the photographers were trained to see and make the light more dramatic(ally) to allow depth, contrast, and texture, rather than relying on color, to make good photographs. This is such a wonderful way to photograph. This, along with so many other reasons, is why to this day, I believe that shooting black and white film (before going straight into digital photography) is so vital for seriously learning all that photography has to offer as an art. Light is (almost) everything.

In the cases of Messrs Lincoln, Darwin, Roosevelt and Twain colour photography was unheard of.

  • James Pauley

How, or where, can I find out how to color photos in PhotoShop CS5?

  • Wayne R.

Excellent selection of shots/treatments. Most really bring their subjects to life in new ways. And it’s good to see it done with such an eye to realism – it would’ve been too easy to make them cartoonish.

  • AJ

Well done, but still just more proof that black & white is far more powerful than color.

  • Hailey

Its not the same with color. Black and white is timeless…color just ruins the impact of the photograph

I think what you are doing is brilliant here, but its illegal. There are no image credits and no permission has been asked to feature these images. You need to be careful, what you are doing is illegal and your website will end up being shut down!

    • Jason

Your an idiot! Most (if not all) of these are public domain and need no permission. It is amazing that people come on the internet and all of a sudden become Einstein (oh can I say Einstein without being told I will be sued) on law and such. Just enjoy the photographs.

@76a4be94ab7440ae399509d30c9ff341:disqus The vast majority of these photos are public domain.  Also, in case you weren’t aware, SOPA and PIPA were shot down, so this website cannot be taken down. Don’t be such a killjoy.

    Also, these photos are amazing.

    • Anon

Whilst I agree, the edited photos are pretty good, you’re incorrect on the SOPA/PIPA thing. Both of these only made it much easier to do what’s already possible. If a copyright holder has an issue with something, they’ve always (and will always) be able to approach the web master and issue a Cease+Desist notice . This gives the site owner the option to remove any copyright content or the owner will press legal charges.

strange how adding colour spoils them all

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kev-Stacey/630806141 Kev Stacey

I thought a few of them came up well, such as Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein and Alfred Hitchcock.  (That snap of Honest Abe was taken about 150 years ago, but it looks like it was snapped yesterday).

  • Enoch Dark

“Colorizing” the “World’s Highest Standard of Living” photo, really drives it home IMHO.

  • Ross Carnes

It’s depressing how many negative, unhappy people there are in the world. As soon as someone changes an image the trolls come out and scream copyright. No one is making money on this “art”. (and when you carry the process to this level, it becomes art.) Go re-read your copyright and let the rest of us enjoy.  (Don’t tell Disney I made some Mickey Chocolate Chip cookies)

The amazing thing about transforming B&W photographs into colour for me personally is that they lose an element of realism and emotion! There is just something about B&W that is more powerful! However, these examples are quite incredible! Thanks for the article, look forward to more!

These are quite amazing! It could be a profitable idea to make a book or a series of books with pictures like these, like remaking history. Great post, thanks for sharing!
